To place or receive calls in your Amazon Connect instance, you need to claim a DID or toll-free phone number. If you have not claimed a phone number when you created your Amazon Connect instance, follow these steps to claim one now.
Claim a number for your contact center
Log in to the Amazon Connect admin website with an Admin account or an account assigned to a security profile that has Phone numbers - Claim permissions.
From the navigation menu, choose Channels, Phone numbers.
Select Claim a number. You can choose a toll-free number or a Direct Inward Dialing (DID) number. If you're in the US, you can specify the area code you want for your number, and only available numbers with that area code will be displayed.

Note Use the Amazon Connect service quotas increase form for these situations:

To claim a phone number programmatically:
Use the SearchAvailablePhoneNumbers API to search for available phone numbers that you can claim for your Amazon Connect instance.
Use the ClaimPhoneNumber API to claim the phone number.
Claiming a number using the ClaimPhoneNumber API puts the number in one of the following three states: CLAIMED, IN_PROGRESS, FAILED.
Run the DescribePhoneNumber API to determine the status of your number claiming process.
CLAIMED means the previous ClaimPhoneNumber or UpdatePhoneNumber operation succeeded.
IN_PROGRESS means a ClaimPhoneNumber or UpdatePhoneNumber operation is still in progress and has not yet completed. You can call DescribePhoneNumber at a later time to verify if the previous operation has completed.
FAILED indicates that the previous ClaimPhoneNumber or UpdatePhoneNumber operation has failed. It will include a message indicating the failure reason. A common reason for a failure may be that the TargetArn value you are claiming or updating a phone number to has reached its limit of total claimed numbers. If you received a FAILED status from a ClaimPhoneNumber API call, you have one day to retry claiming the phone number before the number is released back to the inventory for other customers to claim.

Fortunately, it's easy to stay in touch with friends and family through other channels such as Signal, Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype, email, iMessage, Duo, Wire, to name just a few options. However, for various essential purposes like two-factor authentication with banks, logging into government portals, or even when registering a company or purchasing domain names, having a stable phone number is still a necessity. Many chat apps, like Signal, still require you to log in with a phone number, which can be inconvenient when you rarely keep the same number for long. While carrying an extra phone is one solution, it can become cumbersome and expensive, especially when abroad.
My personal solution for many years has been to utilize a service like Plivo to forward calls to my local number, regardless of my location. The cost is incredibly low, often less than $0.10 per minute, and even as low as $0.02 in certain cases. Although pricing may vary based on the country and carrier to which you are redirecting calls, receiving text messages is completely free, and sending them is extremely affordable. Of course, that will make your call appear as "Private" or "Anonymous" to the call recipient, which may lead to them not answering, but that's why voicemail exists. If you want to send anonymous text messages, you can find apps in your favorite app store for that purpose.
